LEARNING STRATEGIES

With reference to the MEL curriculum, module notebooks are developed by the Horizon of Excellence or private partners. However, partner’s notebooks should be approved/certified by Horizon of Excellence and be updated as per the provisions included in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

In the light of the course or module requirement, Horizon of Excellence offers two leaning options: instructor-led sessions and self-learning.  As much as possible, training materials should be written in layman’s language (with limited statistical formula) and provide enough real-life illustrations. They are also written in the way that make students actively involved and more accountable for their own learning. Teachers ensure access or provide the wide range of appropriate learning resources or related references. Skills for accessing, evaluating, using, and applying information are carefully targeted, ensuring that students meet the outcomes for information literacy identified in the approved curriculum and textbooks or class handouts.

Learning will be facilitated by teachers who understand their critical role, always promoting student involvement and interaction, and assessing learning in ways that ensure that more than simple content is learned. With this increased emphasis on the development of knowledge and skills listed above, students should be better prepared to become lifelong learners, capable of making independent and informed decisions.

Quality Assurance

There is a panel responsible for curriculum development and quality assurance. This one routinely monitors how the courses are delivered, collecting queries and suggestions from students and trainers.

Besides, the Horizon of Excellence LTD keeps contacts with students after their graduation to collect information on the real-life issues they are facing and how they are making good use of the HOREX LTD’s training. The information collected is expected to help refine and update learning programs.

Assessment

Without any exception, everyone student should sit for a test regardless he/she studied the course or module elsewhere.  Therefore, Horizon of Excellence has established a computerized/ paper-based system to assess knowledge and practical skills through continuous evaluation that encourages learners to display the understanding of the principles to set practical tasks and their ability to carry them effectively.  The learner’s progress is documented into a portfolio; which is, a collection of learner work representing learner performance. A folder (or binder or even a digital collection) containing the learner’s work as well as the learner’s evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the work should be maintained.

Portfolios reflect not only the work produced (such as papers and assignments, direct demonstration, indirect demonstration, products, documents), but also it is a record of the activities undertaken over time as part of learner learning. The portfolio is meant to show learner growth, development, and achievements in the education system. It also shows that the graduate or professional have met specific learning goals and requirements.

Regular tests are organized to certify candidates who successfully demonstrated the required competences. This is based on double grading/scoring system: competence and skill grading.  The pass for competence is 5/10 during the assignments and regular evaluations for a particular course. The module score is made of the aggregated course scores. In parallel to competence rating, the rater should also mark the skill involved in gaining each competence. Skills are rated on a scale of 1 to 4:

  • 1: inadequate capacity to exhibit and apply the skill
  • 2: week capacity to exhibit and apply the skill
  • 3: adequate capacity to exhibit and apply the skill
  • 4: strong capacity to exhibit and apply the skill
